City Labs, LLC (referred to from hereon in as "City Labs") was established as a Limited Liability Company in Detroit, Michigan with the expectation of rapid expansion in the safety and compliance industry operating as a licensed business under Michigan's Cannabis Regulatory Agency (CRA) that tests cannabis and cannabis products for contaminants and potency as required by the CRA for both medical and adult-use.

Business Description

City Labs was founded in July 2020 and formulated on 10.02.2020 as a Limited Liability Company under Michigan state laws and headed by Donna Maria Thornton, Owner

Donna Maria Thornton, sole proprietor, is a Native Detroiter, an alumnus of Cass Technical High School and a retired educator/administrator – having dedicated more than 28 years to the children, families and communities of Detroit Public Schools Community District (DPSCD). Thornton’s collegiate experiences include Howard University, Michigan State University and the University of Detroit Mercy. She earned a Masters in Curriculum and Instruction, a Specialist in Psychology with an emphasis in Supervision and Administration, and holds a valid K-12 Administrative Certification, as well as, a Teaching Certification with endorsements in English (BA) and Speech (BX). Thornton is also an approved Social Equity Applicant and has been approved for the Detroit Legacy Certification and has obtained a pre-qualification status with the State of Michigan for the licensing of City Labs.

City Labs shall employ Rae Chennault as the full-time Laboratory Director. Chennault is a Native Detroiter and graduate of Cass Technical High School. Chennault holds a Bachelor of Applied Science in Biology from Spelman College. She is a thirty-plus (30) year Quality Assurance professional. Chenault served 13 years as the Quality Manager for the Division of Viral Diseases at the Centers of Disease Control and 17 years as Quality Manager for C.R Bard, a major medical device manufacturer. Chennault is an ASQ certified Quality Manager, BSI Certified ISO 9001:2015 Lead Auditor (TPECS), ICAgile Certified Professional and certified Change Management Practitioner.

OUR VISION

City Labs will be a first choice, ISO (International Standard Organization) certified, laboratory providing accurate and reliable results with a focus on regulatory compliance, testing, audit-ready documentation, and community development and training. City Labs will act as a defense for independent cannabis operators and processors who need to “lock in” on compliance and secure market access with Michigan’s Cannabis Regulatory Agency (CRA).

OUR MISSION

City Labs will become the first all-Black-woman-owned one-stop Detroit-based compliance partner.

As a Detroit social equity and legacy organization, City Labs is dedicated to our Good Neighborhood plan which is to hire 50+ % of staff from Detroit communities whenever possible and develop our neighboring community by providing employment training and life-skills, and educating persons interested in the cannabis industry.
